It's In the Eyes!
Did you ever wonder how an artist makes those eyes smile? Follow along with this step by step and I hope you have a better understanding!
Fill the eye sockets with White paint, over the traced lines for the iris.  One coat please.
Line the upper lash line with Black.
Darken the outer edge of the iris so the you can see it well.
Fill in the iris with Payne's Gray plus White plus a dit of Burnt Sienna.
Place a comma of Payne's Gray plus White in the lower right quadrant of the iris.  This is the reflected light.
Paint the pupil Black and line the outer edge of the iris with Black.
Float Payne's Gray against the lash line with the paint floated over the eye.  This is a shadow being cast by eye lashes.
Add a highlight of White directly between the iris and pupil at 11 o'clock.  Float White at the base of the eye.  This float should cover the  base of the iris.  This is the signature of the smiling eye.  The lower lid rises to define the smile.
This is the piece I am painting right now, still working on him, needs a few corrections here and there.  Thanks for looking!
