Mermaids of art and legend are often depicted holding a mirror and a comb.  Mermaids sometimes sit on the rocks and sing, luring sailors to their doom.  This is why they are sometimes confused with sirens.  There has long been an association between the two. This Mermaid is painted on a 24 inch oar. Makes a great seaside greeting and can be customized.Shipping is included in the US mail option.

Everyone has seen pictures of mermaids- almost every seafaring culture reported them.  Sightings have been made by the early Greeks and Arabs, medieval sailors,  and up into the 1900's. Mermaids sing beautiful songs, that lure men in.  Alternatively, the songs might lull them to sleep,Orpheus immediately realized the peril they were in when the mermaids sang. He took out his lyre and sang a song so clear and ringing that it drowned the sound of those lovely fatal voices. When on another journey Odysseus' ship passed the mermaids. Odysseus had the sailors stuff their ears with wax. He had himself tied to the mast for he wanted to hear their beautiful voices. The Sirens sang when they approached, their words even more enticing than the melody. They would give knowledge to every man who came to them, they said, ripe wisdom and a quickening of the spirit.
